Wealth of the Poor: An Economic Look into Poverty is Jeepney Magazine’s latest issue, released early this week.
In this issue, Jeepney explored the question whether Philippines is a poor country, or a rich country pretending to be poor. The country’s gross domestic product grew over the years, but this growth has not so much been translated into poverty reduction schemes aimed to shorten the gap between the rich and the poor.
The Jeepney also explored different occupations of our poor, as pedicab drivers, scavengers, jeepney drivers as well as jeepney barkers, earning and surviving through the expenses of the day.
For Celebrity Spotlight, the magazine featured Sarah Balabagan, a Filipino domestic worker in United Arab Emirates convicted of murder and sentenced to 100 lashes by a cane in 1995. While her past had been a celebrated case, her interview unfolded us to stories and lessons of her present and for the future.
The International Justice Mission (IJM) is also featured in Who’s Helping. A human rights agency that secures justice for victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression, IJM in the Philippines also deals with children in conflict with the law, as children were being detained in adult facilities.
Other features included in the magazine are Poor Interest, which talked about micro-financing and money lending in the Philippines specifically called five-six, Saving Lives which described Quirino Memorial Medical Center’s devotion to its patients, and a recipe to a famous Filipino side dish Atchara.

hi – can i get an electronic copy of this edition of The jeepney ???
Thanx, rgds, dave
last week i was window shopping for a new cellphone at park square when a jeepney vendor approached me and offered me the jeepney magazine. i was a bit skeptical at first when she told me all about the magazine’s foundation and purpose. it didn’t take much for mely,(the vendor),to move me with her inspiring story of how jeepney helped her to be where she is today. buying your magazine was the best purchase i did that day! reading your articles is a humbling experience for me,it made me want to do better things for others. so the next time i came by a jeepney vendor,i’ll definitely buy another issue. keep up the good work guys!
Dave, the electronic copy for the sixth issue is already available in the archive section of the Jeepney website. Hope you like it!
Thanks, Rina and Pia for your support. A single purchase can do much for our vendor partners.
Ate Mely’s story will be featured in our Vendor Profile section for the seventh issue. Hers is a moving story. It will be part of our feature on the conflict in Mindanao which will be released very soon. Hope you’ll support this one as well!
